Did you know that we ate cuyes (pronounced "Cui" or "spineless" by region)? These are guinea pigs, pets in Quebec but flat luxury in the Andes. In fact we not only ate the cuyes, we have also purchased, transported and we witnessed the killing and dépessage.
It happened two weeks ago already but at the time I did not have Internet access effective enough to send you pictures. Now I've found the perfect place to feed the blog, I want to remember this story that happened when we lived near Riobamba.
We had so much talk of cuyes for 1 year it was impassable to not eat. The opportunity presented itself to the favor of visiting a community, when we were shown a small breeding these adorable creatures. Some students immediately fell in love with the furry, while others have mostly seen the possibility of having their plates.
And locally the number of sadists exceeded the number of "animal lovers", we are left with 3 cuyes live in a bag. We had 30 minutes to walk back to our community, but Julian, the sadistic chief, was able to safely bring the valuable cargo.
(Julien carrying the bag containing three cuyes alive. We can also see a tab out of the bag)
Strangely everyone interested in the thing ... although some more enthusiastically than others!
The cooking storm in our community have done without flinching the tedious task of putting to death of the "strip" and cook them on fire.
Students have had great pleasure in offering one of three heads to their teacher! But eventually everyone came to the same conclusion: not much to eat that and not particularly tasty ... better get back to good old chicken!
